Marching towards , and making history :
Rafael nadal
This years French open popularly known as Rolland garros the second grand slam of the year which is played on the red dirt began the last week of may where the most popular rafa nadal also known as the king of clay began his campaign to bid his sixth Rolland garros title and equalling to bjorn borg the legendary Swedish tennis player.
Rafa was tested in the very first match of this grand slam where he was against the big serve john isner . the 6’9 inch tall isner emerged as a dominating player when he was at lead two sets to 1 but rafa sealed the victory by maintaining his game play and style and won the match in five sets 6-4 6-7 6-7 6-2 6-4 in 4hours and 1minute.
Next was fellow compatriot Pablo andrujar whom rafa ousted in straight sets to claim victory in the third round he faced Croatian Antonio veic who had upset nikolay davydenko in the very second round of the championship. But rafa had a easy win 6-1 6-3 6-0.
Next was ivan ljubicic whom also rafa ousted in straight sets .
The most interesting part of the tournament starts here :
The quarterfinals of Rolland garros and rafa’s next opponent the Swedish robin soderling 5th seeded who is the only player in the open era to defeat rafa in one of his favourate grandslam same place just two years back and on the same date here in paris and also he was last years finalist at RG. So it was a big match for both the players .rafa was dominating throughout the game his serve was better than ever the topspin was very much perfectly hitted and his crosscourt shorts were perfect enough to demolish the swede in straight sets 6-4 6-1 7-6.
Next up was the semifinals and his opponent was 4th seeded andy murray who had beaten rafa at the quarter finals of Australian open this year. Murray was suffering from an ankle injury still he came on court with a very positive attitude but that was rafa’s day as it was it his favourate tournament and his birthday 3rd of june 2011 in just more than 3 hours and containing a longest ralley of 31 shots rafa won the match beating murray 6-4 7-5 6-4.
Now I would rather call it as “THE CLIMAX” : THE FINALS OF FRENCH OPEN 2011
Any grandslam to us feels like it is incomplete if itz not a nadal Federer match isn’t it? It is because we are used to it and rafa and roger are the best players in the history of tennis and very famous for their rivalry. The day was perfect for a perfect final and the perfect players were also there a RAFA-ROGER showdown .
Both the players headed onto the court with high motivation to win the tournament rafa had won 5 times here and roger only once and rafa had beaten roger 3 times here at paris.
The match began with Federer had an early break and was at lead 3-1 in the first set and was at lead 5-3 but hats off too rafa nadal who Federer twice with his consistent forhand and crosscourt backhand winners and sealed the first set 7-5 kept the crowd in shock the second set was also quiet thrilling in which none of the player could break the serve and match went to a tie break where rafa won the second and was at lead 2 sets to luv. The set set rafa was a bit low and could not save himself from the Federer single handed powerful backhand and Federer broke his serve in the sixth game and won the third set .but still rafa was on lead the fourt set began aftr a short break. Rafa had an early break of roger’s serve and was lead 3-1 within another 15 min he was 5-1 lead and he was serving for the championship when Federer hit an unforced error a long forehand and rafa held down onto his knees and that moment was a bliss .
Rafael nadal won his sith French open title and equalled to bjorn borg making history . and by winning this title he also save his top spot ranking and still the no.1 player in the world .
By winning the French open 2011 nadal has bagged his 10th grandslam title and has completed a career grandslam as well as a career golden slam which includes an Olympic gold medal , 1 australian open , 1 us open , 2 wimbledons , and six French open.
Vamos Rafa!
